Freezing Tempertures

Freezing Temperatures Alert for Wafco Mills Residents

It is predicted that lows throughout Greensboro will dip around 25 degrees starting on Wednesday, with forecasted snow beginning Friday into Saturday. With low temperatures comes an increased potential for broken pipes and other hazards associated with freezing temperatures. Below are some tips to help prevent pipes from potentially freezing in your Wafco Mills home:

Prevention Tips

  • Keep Your Heat On: Set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees.

  • Garden Hoses: Drain and disconnect garden hoses.

  • Faucet Covers: Install covers on outdoor faucets.

  • Garage Precautions: Keep garage doors shut if water supply lines are in the garage.

  • Let Water Flow: Allow cold water to trickle from faucets to keep water flowing.

  • Vent Covers: Cover or close open-air vents.

  • Pipe Insulation: Insulate outdoor pipes.

  • Warm Air Circulation: Open cabinets and doors to allow warm air to reach pipes.

  • Water Valve Knowledge: Learn how to shut off water valves in case of a pipe burst.

If Pipes Freeze

If you suspect a frozen pipe, here’s how to identify and address the issue:

  • Check the Faucet: If only a trickle of water comes out when turned on, a frozen pipe may be the cause. Common locations include pipes against exterior walls or where the water service enters through the foundation.

  • Keep the Faucet Open: As the frozen pipe begins to thaw, water will flow, helping to melt the ice inside the pipe.

  • Apply Heat Safely: Use an electric heating pad, hair dryer, or portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials) to warm the affected pipe. Alternatively, wrap the pipe with towels soaked in hot water.

  • Avoid Open Flames: Never use a blowtorch, kerosene, propane heater, charcoal stove, or any open flame device to thaw pipes.

  • Restore Pressure: Continue applying heat until normal water pressure is restored.

  • Contact a Professional: If you cannot locate or safely thaw the frozen pipe, contact a licensed plumber for assistance.

Stay safe and take these precautions to minimize risks during freezing temperatures. Wafco Mills Management encourages all residents to prepare early and reach out with any community concerns or emergencies.
